Postgraduate Research Funding Opportunities

There are a number of funding opportunities available to students including scholarships, studentships, industrial funding, awards and bursaries

The Eric Birse Studentship (2015)

The Eric Birse Trust was founded in 1984 by the family of Dr Eric A Birse to commemorate his life and work. The primary intention of the Trust is to fund, via The Eric Birse Studentship, PhD research in the field of Chemical Engineering. The studentship is open to all who wish to work in this discipline subject to meeting the Eligibility criteria and to complying with the Application Procedure both of which are detailed below. The successful applicant will become a member of the Institute for Materials and Processes in the School of Engineering. To date, the Studentship has supported seven PhD students each of whom has progressed to have successful careers in industry and academia.

Selection Procedure

The School's Prostgraduate Progression Committee, the Director for Chemical Engineering and the Head of Materials and Processes will meet in February 2015 to select the successful project.

Dr Eric A B Birse, OBE: Eric Birse was for some 30 years until his retirement, Chief Chemical Inspector for Scotland with responsibility for advancing both the regulation and implementation of pollution control measures within Scotland. A PhD physical chemist from The University of Edinburgh, he earned considerable respect from his peers for the rigour and quality of his scientific analysis and from Government Ministers, administrators and industrialists for his pragmatic approach to the control of industrial emissions.

Studentships Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)

Each year the Graduate School has a limited number of EPSRC studentships available. These cover University fees, plus provide an annual, tax-free stipend.

These are open to the whole school, regardless of research area, and as such are very competitive.

The Principal's Career Development Scholarship

This exciting scholarship scheme provides a valuable opportunity for postgraduate research students to undertake a package of training and development which will help them to develop the necessary skills required to meet their career choices and offer them a breadth of development opportunities in areas such as teaching, public engagement, entrepreneurship, data science, and research.

China Scholarships Council awards

In 2015-2016 20 joint awards are available across the University with the CSC for PhD study.

  • Deadline for 2016/17: Applicants should apply online for PhD admission to the University of Edinburgh by Friday 30 January 2016, and should complete a China Scholarship Council/University of Edinburgh Joint Scholarship application form which should be submitted to the relevant College/School, also by Friday 30 January 2016.

Edinburgh Global Research Scholarships

The University will fund 30 Edinburgh Global Research Scholarships with 2 of them going to Engineering.
