Direct Drive Generator for a Tidal Turbine

Nova Innovation and IES are collaborating to design, build and test a direct drive generator for Nova’s tidal current turbine.

The KTP Associate, Dr. Richard Crozier, will develop an integrated electromagnetic, structural and thermal model of the machine. Using this model he will produce an optimised design taking into account the turbine characteristics and the operational environment.

The generator will be designed with fault tolerance and reliability in mind to minimise O&M costs. In order to investigate the impact of marinisation individual generator sub-components will be manufactured and tested in the sea. A small prototype, 6kW, will be built and tested at Edinburgh, to provide verification of the design optimisation tools.

Ultimately the outcomes of the project will be used to design, build and test a full scale generator for Nova’s products.

The project is funded by Innovate UK (https://www.innovateuk.org/).
