Professor Alistair Elfick: Stabilising and sustaining bacterial communities using metapopulation controls

Abstract

In the field of ecology metapopulation dynamics is a well-established paradigm in which extinctions of a local population of a species are balanced by regional persistence through migration. In a pilot study involving two Ecoli strains we demonstrated that metapopulation control could be an effective method to stabilise a bacterial community.  Drawing on this study I shall look at potential applications of metapopulation control in bioproduction and acceleration of directed evolution. To conclude, a touch of indulgent pseudo-scientific speculation will be shared.
