The School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh is looking to appoint a Firmware Engineer to work within its LiFi Research and Development Centre (LRDC). The LRDC conducts internationally leading research in collaboration with, and on behalf of industry. It aims to accelerate society’s adoption of LiFi and emerging wireless technology through engagement with industrial partners, and to fully harness it’s commercial and innovative potential. Formed in 2013, the Centre has received over £8 million of competitively won funding.
The LRDC is taking emerging LiFi technologies into mainstream applications that will soon begin to impact on many aspects of the modern world. The LRDC continues to drive all aspects of LiFi communication from novel devices, to the integration of LiFi access points in agile heterogeneous 5 and 6G networks enabled by emerging software defined networking (SDN) infrastructures.
The successful candidate will develop firmware and software for LiFi prototypes and develop and implement OFDM PHY layer firmware. The candidate will integrate with higher level open source communication protocol stack, facilitate the development of reference platforms by either selecting suitable existing development DSP platforms and/or suitable components to build and create firmware/software required to run them. Develop user facing applications and/or use case specific applications to augment demonstrations. Develop requirement specification documents and test procedures, and test and characterize system performance.
The candidate must have a degree in computer science or electrical engineering with at least 5 years of experience in relevant industry. It is expected that the candidate would have demonstrable significant contributions to product designs and understanding of fundamental requirements of getting products to market, as well as an understanding of embedded systems. The candidate must have experience of Verilog/VHDL, C/C++/C# and Embedded Linux.
