It was a bright morning, my flight landed at Edinburgh Airport. The first thing that I saw after I came out of the airport was the slogan ‘This Is Home’.
Hi! My name is Qing Kino and I am in my first year of a PhD in Bioengineering. I began my studies in Edinburgh in 2013 when I completed the Structural and Fire Safety Engineering MSc programme. Living in Edinburgh is fantastic because you can meet lots of different people from different cultures. The diversity of the culture leads to a sense of community rather than division. I recently celebrated Chinese New Year and have realized that more and more non-Chinese people are celebrating it too.
We had a Chinese New Year event in my student hall this year; we did lots of traditional Chinese activities like dumpling making and calligraphy while Chinese New Year music played in the background. We started with an introduction to the dumpling and its history. My non-Chinese friends didn’t know how to make dumplings at beginning, so my Chinese friends and I gave them a detailed lesson. After a little practice, they made better looking dumplings than me!
After the spending some time making dumplings, we tried some calligraphy. One of my friends is Russian and she could read and wright Chinese characters, which I thought was quite impressive. She wrote a lot of funny sentences while the rest of us practiced. At the end of the event, everyone wrote one blessing for New Year. It was a lot of fun!
Qing will be writing for our blog monthly, come back to hear more from him! If you'd like any more information about any of our bloggers, please contact our PGT Enquiries mailbox.
