Low-power electronic interface for environmental sensors

The deterioration of water quality, caused by climatic/seasonal changes, global-warming, or industrial waste etc. is a major global concern. Water quality directly impacts our lives as drinks or food made from it affect the health. This project is a part of a multidisciplinary team that will work on novel sensor network for water quality monitoring. The PhD candidate will be involved in developing new sensors and sensor instrumentation using CMOS or non-CMOS hardware.

The candidate should have knowledge in CMOS electronics, particularly in low-power readout circuits for sensor interface. Knowledge in wireless transceiver is desirable. The candidate should also have some exposure to cleanroom facilities and is expected to do some CMOS post-processing. 

The project is part of AQUASENSE, a multi-site Innovative Training Network (ITN) comprising 14 internationally reputed research teams. The candidate will have ample opportunity to travel between partner countries and will also get an opportunity for a secondment at a different organization.

Eligibility: 

Applicants can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake physical, transnational mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment.  Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date.

Minimum entry qualification - an Honours degree at 2:1 or above (or International equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline, possibly supported by an MSc Degree. Further information on English language requirements for EU/Overseas applicants.

Funding: 

The successful applicant will be awarded Tuition Fees  (Home/EU or Overseas rate), a significantly enhanced stipend, a mobility allowance and a family allowance.
