Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate to undertake a research project on wave-current-turbulence-induced fatigue and dynamic loading on tidal turbines. The post-holder will work with Dr Venki Venugopal and Prof Alistair Borthwick in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, and Prof Nigel Barltrop at Strathclyde University. The position is to commence in May 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter, and is full time and fixed-term for 12 months.

This recruitment is for the EPSRC funded FlowTurb consortium and the project will investigate the combined effect of tidal currents, gravity waves, and ambient flow turbulence on the dynamic response of tidal energy converters. A high quality database of field and laboratory measurements involving wave and tidal current interactions has already been established through other work packages within FloWTurb consortium. In addition controlled experiments have also been carried out at Edinburgh University’s FloWave facility and the hydrodynamic loads on the rotor of a scale model tidal current turbine and its foundation structure have been measured. The post-holder will use these data to characterise wave-current-turbulence interactions, and to determine the fatigue loading on the turbine’s rotor and foundation.

You should have (or be due to submit soon) a PhD, or have equivalent experience, in Marine Energy (Wave/Tide/Offshore wind)/Energy Engineering or a related subject. You must have relevant expertise in wave-current dynamics and an excellent knowledge and understanding on hydrodynamic and fatigue loading. Relevant industrial engagement/experience is also desirable.
