The School of Engineering is part of a network of leading UK universities and international industry bodies aiming to accelerate the switch to green energy and propulsion across road, rail, sea and air freight modes. Three academics from our School are representing the University of Edinburgh in the network: Dr Ignazio Maria Viola who is Co-Investigator on the project, alongside Professor Steve Finney and Professor Markus Müller – all from the School’s Institute for Energy Systems (IES).
Dr Encarni Medina-Lopez is Chancellor’s Fellow in Data Driven Innovation in the School’s Research Institute for Infrastructure and Environment, focusing on a number of marine energy research themes including how human actions affect coastal areas. Ruben Bravo, a PhD student in the Institute for Energy Systems, has won an award for a presentation he delivered at the 3rd Annual Conference in Energy Storage and Its Applications from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy. In addition, he was awarded a grant to collaborate with researchers at the University of Seville on the optimisation of solar power plants with thermochemical storage.

A team from the School of Engineering has claimed sixth prize of £5,000 in the Winton Climate Prediction Market competition, which saw academic teams attempt to predict monthly UK temperature and rainfall over six months from April to September 2018.
