Brathikan Vijayamohan, MSc Sustainable Energy Systems

What attracted you to the University of Edinburgh and this programme, in particular?

The University of Edinburgh is known for its contribution towards sustainable energy. I wish to learn about wave energy and this university is the pioneer in that.

What do you wish you'd worried about less before starting your MSc?

I worried too much about the initial days in the city, and how I was going to get around it but I brought many things to support myself, and the city soon became very familiar.

What one thing would you recommend new students at the University of Edinburgh do?

Participate in the Welcome Week events and explore Edinburgh.

Any student wisdom you'd like to pass on?

Everyone is from a different culture, so don't judge and if anyone does that to you, understand it and give time for them to change.

What aspects of student life do you enjoy the most and why?

The chance to learn.

What do you most like about studying here?

The facility and the faculties.

What do you find most challenging and most rewarding about your programme?

Sometimes is can be difficult to see your tutors. Due to their various commitments, it is not always possible just to pop by and chat with them, so make sure to arrange a meeting in advance.  Also, since the classes are at various times and the students’ schedules are different, not all the classmates are well connected so make sure to take to heart my next tip.

What's a 'must do' at the University of Edinburgh?

Be a part of at least one student society! I am a part of Engineering for Change but it doesn't have to be of any specific technical society. Do not spend your university time in class and accommodation only even though being a master's student is tough, make sure to include socialising in your tight schedule.

What is your favourite course so far and why

Technology for Sustainable development, due to its coverage of all the aspects which we wouldn't learn otherwise and is most important for a sustainable engineer.

How would you describe the practical elements of the programme?

The courses I chose do not have any practical elements.

Where is your favourite place to study?

Study space at King's Building.

Can you tell us of any personal or professional achievements during your studies?

Not yet. Surviving happily so far is itself a good thing for me.

As long as it is not confidential, can you tell us what your research topic you are focusing on?

Wave energy. Not yet the exact topic as I am about to submit my mission statement soon. I have started working and I will continue in “Understanding the forces by wave energy convertors on one another when parallelly connected using potential wave theory." This will get more specific soon.

How is your programme equipping you for your future career?

Good so far. Hoping that it will be the same and will probably increase in the upcoming days too.

Can you tell us of any future career plans you might have at this stage?

PhD in wave energy and my own startup after that.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of studying at the University of Edinburgh?

Don’t think about the QS ranking, If the subject of your programme has good past research, go for it at this university.
