The School of Engineering is consistently ranked as one of world’s best Engineering Schools and is in the top 100 in the world, top 20 in Europe, top 6 in UK and number 1 in Scotland in leading international subject rankings:
- QS Rankings by Subject 2024: Engineering and Technology – 51st in the world
- THE Subject Rankings 2024: Engineering – 83rd in the world
The QS rankings highlight universities leading across the main engineering disciplines and computer science. The THE rankings highlight universities that are leading across general engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering.
Research Excellence Framework (REF)

Our Disciplines
Our overall performance reflects the world standing of our Engineering Disciplines. The QS world subject rankings place us #1 in Scotland, top 10 in the UK and top 20 in Europe in the majority of our disciplines. Our QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 are:
- Chemical Engineering - 56th in the world
- Civil and Structural engineering - 63rd [51-100] in the world
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering - 53rd in world
- Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering - 138th in the world
