MSc Degree Programme: 

The rapid advances of the global information age are to a very large extent due to advances in modern electronics. Electronics expertise gives economies, countries and industries the competitive edge in the world’s economy.

This MSc programme provides a broad understanding of modern electronics giving expertise in the design, simulation and construction of electronic systems. It also allows for a flexible approach to studying electronics allowing you to tailor your MSc to fit your interests.

It is aimed squarely at educating students to be at the forefront of industry and research, fostering a firm understanding of principles, providing excellent practical experience through our advanced laboratories and individual MSc project.

Advanced laboratories in analogue and digital electronics include a unique analogue VLSI teaching chip and a state of the art programmable digital laboratory environment, resulting in a significant emphasis on laboratory based learning. The teaching chip, developed in association with Scottish Enterprise, is a unique aspect of the degree programme at the University of Edinburgh. We expect our MSc graduates to have well-developed academic and professional skills who will be able to contribute to the Electronics industry and research in Electronics due to their familiarity with the research and design process.

Degree Structure: 

Students applying for an Electronics MSc degree will find that there is a great deal of flexibility in our degree programme with three distinct streams as follows:

  • Analogue VLSI
  • Analogue/Digital Electronics
  • Bioelectronics

Within these streams there is a certain degree of choice over individual course selection, allowing students to tailor their degree programme to their interests. Each postgraduate course consists of a balance of lectures, tutorials, workshops and visits. Please note that the courses listed below are the courses offered for 2015/16 and may change depending on availability and timetabling requirements.

Funding and Finance: 

Funding

The School of Engineering and the University of Edinburgh offer many scholarships and bursaries. These range from course specific funding options, to general MSc scholarships. You can visit the University's scholarships website to find out more.

The School of Engineering also has several courses which are eligible for the Postgraduate Loans (SAAS) which is a loan system for Scottish/EU students. Fees and Living Expenses

Certain fees and other additional programme costs (eg research costs, class field trips) must be paid in full by each postgraduate student at the beginning of each academic session in September. More information about fees and additional costs can be found on the degree pages.

In terms of living expenses, you do not need to provide evidence of funding, however, you should be aware that, in applying for admission, you will be taking on a major commitment in terms of both time and money. The University recommends approximately £150 per week if living in University self-catered accommodation and £180 per week if in University catered halls (these figures include rent, lunches and personal expenditure). MSc Electronics at Edinburgh has a number of key features which make our graduates very attractive to employers in industry. The programme's equal balance between Analogue and Digital electronics is unique, plus projects completed on this programme are embedded in research group work which is very close to real-world industrial projects. The optional economics or management modules related to modern technological and innovative industries also give our students a good preparation to transfer to managerial or technical roles in research, design and development in various sectors like IT, telecommunications, defence or medical electronics.
