Decolonising Engineering: Why is it necessary and what can we do?

You might have heard the term Decolonisation in media and how the UK academia is responding to this very important topic.

The University of Edinburgh has taken the idea of Decolonisation very seriously, and all the three colleges have set up working groups to advise on this issue. Within the College of Science and Engineering (CSE), each of the Schools has been working separately on this topic for a while.

With this seminar, we want to invite more people to the discussion table and encourage them to take up Decolonisation as a priority.

Dr Srinjoy Mitra

Dr Srinjoy Mitra, is the convenor of the College Decolonisation Working Group and is leading our School's activities on this topic. He will present his thoughts in this seminar.

If you are unaware of the topic or unsure how Engineering figures in this discussion, a working definition might help you to start:

The process of Decolonisation will question the Eurocentric perspective of scientific knowledge, it will elaborate on how colonialism shaped historical scientific/technological development and will confront the neo-colonialism sustained by innovations in applied sciences and technology.
