We are looking for an ambitious researcher in experimental fluid mechanics, who is willing to join a dynamic team of researchers at the University of Edinburgh.

The Opportunity

These Research Associate positions will contribute to experimental and theoretical research on fluid-structure interaction, including wind and water tunnel tests. The main focus of this research position is to support the experimental activities of the Morphing Blades project. The project aims to demonstrate a new-concept blade for wind and tidal turbines. The post holders will work within a team made of two Research Associates, several PhD students and advisors Prof. Ignazio Maria Viola and Dr Eddie McCarthy at the U. of Edinburgh, and Dr Anna Young at the U. of Bath. Additional collaborators include the Italian Centre for National Research and seven internationally-leading companies in the wind and tidal energy sector. The aim of the project is to investigate the underlying fluid mechanics of passive pitch systems and deformable blades to mitigate unsteady loads and maximise power output over a range of flow conditions. The post holders will be responsible for the design, commission and test of model scale blades, as well as for the development of theoretical fluid mechanics models. Model-scale blade sections will be tested in the water tunnels of the School of Engineering of the University of Edinburgh, where time-resolved and stereo particle image velocimetry will be undertaken. Model scale blades will also be tested on a 1.2-m-diameter turbine in the large-scale facility Flowave. Experimental tests will be undertaken mostly in water, but complementary wind tunnel studies will be considered. The aim, in fact, is to deliver fundamental knowledge that could underpin the development of technology for both the wind and the tidal energy sector. The project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The post holder will also have opportunities to contribute to other experimental activities within the Vortex Interaction Laboratory (VOILAb), including the ERC-funded project Dandidrone, which aims to develop insect-scale dandelion-inspired drones for environmental monitoring.
