Evaluating the sustainability of polymer membrane fabrication and applications

Applications are invited for postgraduate research leading to a PhD degree in Engineering within the subject area of Chemical Engineering.

The products of chemical engineering are ubiquitous in our daily lives, from water to clean air to energy to food. Well-established processes are already in place to deliver these essentials in an efficient and effective manner. As we progress further into the 21st century, we need to consider if these processes are sustainable. As such researchers have developed alternative processes to deliver these essentials differently. Unfortunately, these alternative processes are not entirely sustainable.

This research focuses on using life-cycle assessments to evaluate the sustainability of incumbent and new materials fabrication and separation processes required for clean water production, carbon capture and resource recovery.

The project will be carried out at the Institute of Materials and Processes (IMP). The student will attain skills in lifecycle assessments, synthesis of microporous materials, polymer membrane fabrication and evaluation. The student will also learn various experimental techniques like gas adsorption analysis, polymer synthesis, FTIR, SEM, TEM, NMR, and AFM. These skills will be essential for a student perusing industrial careers in the water/carbon capture sector; in addition they will be important for an academic career in Chemical Engineering/Materials Engineering.
